I’m having a celebratory beer, because my design was chosen as the winner of the 2013 Floydfest t-shirt design contest. Pumped!

Door Knockers on display in Harpers Ferry
Art, ProjectsSome of the door knockers are being displayed right now at a gallery in Harper’s Ferry called “Steam at Harper’s Ferry“
Why my postman hates me
Art, ProjectsThe local clay store couldn’t get any more hydrocal from their distributor so I found this great deal on Ebay.
If it fits it ships!
Even if its 40 lbs of hydrocal that you bought off of eBay. The box looked like it was shot-putted onto my doorstep. Also every inch of it was covered in clear packing tape. I guess the seller didn’t want to have his package mistaken for anthrax.
Artomatic 2012 Installed
Art, ProjectsI finished installing my show for the 2012 Artomatic in Crystal City. I am happy with most of the work, I got really stressed the final weekend because I had to finish making about 12 of the door knockers in the last weekend. I wasn’t able to be as creative with the painting because I wanted to have one rusty one, one silver one, and one copper one for each design. Â So that one left one each for the creative designs.
But I really learned a lot in the process, I learned that if I’m going to get complicated with the painting I should probably paint them first and then glue them on. I learned that I should probably test the hanging mechanism before I get to the show. Â I also learned that paint drys out if you don’t use it for 2 years.
As much as I can relax a little from creating these guys every free minute I have I can’t really take too much time off. I need to have some ready because I think people are going to want custom colors and I’m going to be selling ‘blanks’ so that other artists can design their own. Â Which is fine with me because I really like the construction part better anyway. Â That would free me up to create more sculptures and worry less about finishing them.
I need to re-evaluate the construction process. I have it pretty much down to a science now, I can order all the parts from McMaster-Carr. But there are two steps that I need to improve, its really annoying to cut the u-bolts shorter with a dremel and I know there has to be a better way to make the knocker hinge then bending a screw eye. Â Also I haven’t perfected the attaching it to the door part… which would seem like a major part right?
Artomatic is already taking over my life
Art, ProjectsSigned up : check
Worked 2 construction shifts : check
Make art : I knew I was forgetting something.
Installation has to be complete by May 13th… and I’m already way behind. But I have lots of old door knocker parts, I’ve finished 2 posters, and I’m almost to the casting stage of 3 new knocker designs. So things are in motion.
Project Progress : Rad Poster yet again
Art, ProjectsThis has been an unprecidented level of motivation for this project. It probably comes from knowing that other people are working on a goal of having the 25th aniversary screening of Rad in Cochrane, Canada and that would be the deadline for this project. Check that out at TheMovieRad.com.
As this project goes along I’m somehow getting better and worse at illustrator at the same time. When the source image is of low resolution its really important to know where to make the lines in order to convey the shape or shading that you want. But it’s also a lot more work and this is clearly the biggest project in terms of illustrated faces that I’ve taken on. So I get a little fatigued in certain ones and I think it’s starting to show in the details. After putting a few of them together I realized that it’s really going to be important to stay consistent in style, level of detail, and skin tones. But, really of these four, the only one that I’m not extremely excited about is the Luke and Becky one… mostly just Becky’s neck… she looks like she has some kind of giant worm neck… So these previews are really going to change in the final, or at least some of them will.
But not Mr. Timmer… that one is awesome.
He may get his own print.
