Project Progress : Rad Poster Update

In an effort to keep motivated I’ve decided to post regular updates about my projects that are still in progress. I’m going to do this for a whole bunch of projects when I move into the new house, but for now the most ambitious project I have on my plate is the Illustrated poster for the 1986 movie RAD.

I made a huge amount of progress in the last couple weeks. These drawings are all clearly preliminary as I will probably go back into them an add or take away details depending on how big they will be in the final print. I’m trying not to get too excited about it because I have a tendency to lose motivation when I can see the project being complete in my mind. But I have a plan for this one so I’m trying to be more organized. I have full color illustrations complete-ish for 5 characters on the poster.  I’m posting previews of three more of them below.

Gentlemen, behold!

Look what I have created!

It’s a hooded sweatshirt version of Cru Jones’ Rad Racing jersey from Rad. I know this movie came out in 1986 and it isn’t even popular enough to be released on DVD yet. But I just wanted one. I wanted it bad. I think it’s the right time for something like this. I don’t know what you call this genre of clothing. Adult costumes you can wear everyday? Costume Hoodies? I’m starting to see them out there more and more. Marc Ecko has a Star Wars line that is really awesome (I own the storm trooper hoodie)  A few years ago I thought it would be a cool idea to print out my own version of the “Rad Racing” shirt from the movie. But then I found that someone else had beat me to it. If you do a search for that now you’ll find a lot of different versions of it.  The colors of this aren’t “movie prop accurate” but I thought bright red and blue would be too much to actually wear on a regular basis, which is what I made this for.  I can’t wait for the first time somebody gets the reference and asks me where I got it.

When I was designing this I had all these grand plans to sell them on Etsy.com. I even thought of two company names, High Art Hoodies or Cult Status.  I thought that if I could sell them for about $75 it would make it worth the effort. Everything was going great until I hit the last step, sewing. It turns out that sewing is hard. I did eventually finish but the quality is on par with Old Navy not Marc Ecko. Luckily I was going for the comfortable soft felt vibe. If I do get some response on this I’ll probably have to find some ways to make the process easier. Like having someone else do the sewing! I do have all the templates for the stars and letters ready, so that will save some time. I’m thinking I could get them laser cut from a fabrication shop and then find out how much a dry cleaners or alteration shop would charge me to sew them on. With this being a limited edition product with a small but dedicated I would imagine that someone would be interested in it.

Rhys Cooper – Them Crooked Vultures posters

The band Them Crooked Vultures may have rocked my eardrums this year, but I don’t think I’m ready to drop $80 on a 3 poster set. That said, these posters rock. Who can’t love vultures dressed in fur lined Victorian trench coats???  These sir, are fancy birds. The monocle clad JPJ top hat vulture is my favorite. Maybe if I didn’t have to pay $20 to get them shipped from Australia…or someone could just buy them for me…

When I got the IPhone I stopped using the old Bose headphones. So I decided that I would paint them.  The only problem with this is that I’ve never been able to paint anything that looked good for longer than a week. I set these aside until I almost forgot about them, I pulled them out last night to take a look at them. Turns out I used water based paint in the airbrush and it had already started flaking off. So instead of taking my time and finishing the design with perfection, I descided to whip out the extra-fine paint pen and just freehand it. I took a bunch of pictures because I’m sure that in a week or so these are gointg to look like crap and I’m going to have to do a lot of work to start over.

I’ve been kicking around this idea for a while and I was bored the other day so I thought I’d test some things out. Just like the skull I think that if you draw something enough you can sculpt it too. I’ve been drawing tentacles in my sketchbooks for years. I’ve always just liked them, they’re like the remote controls of the animal kingdom. One looks a little bit like an elephants trunk, but I think with some paint they’ll be awesome. I’ll say one thing, sketching is a lot different from working with clay.

I finally delivered these last Monday. I’d been working on them for a long time. I got an email from someone who had seen them at Artomatic and wanted one for a unique wedding gift for a friend and one for herself. She wanted them to be mostly black with these specific colors. I hadn’t done a one with black as the main color. I had a few false starts and paint mistakes, but in the end I think they came out awesome.

Things I learned from these.

  1. Gloss black is cool by itself, but hard to do color effects over.
  2. I hate oil paints.
  3. Airbrushing is both harder and easier than I thought.
  4. Plaster casts can be brittle.
  5. I need to pay attention to knocker length. (that’s what she said)
